The River Suir
The Suir (pronounced Sure) rises in the Devil’s Bit near Moneygall in Co. Tipperary and flows in a southerly direction past Templemore, through Thurles and Cahir to the boundary between counties Tipperary and Waterford. Babbling stream, gently flowing river or broad lake; game or coarse; novice or expert; no matter what kind of angler you are, nor what stretch of water you most love to cast a line over, Tipperary has it all. Thanks to its ideal habitat the Suir is replete with trout and salmon. It is renowned as a dry fly fishing location and its excellent access makes it a perennial favourite with anglers. The best of the salmon fishing extends downstream from Ardfinnan towards Carrick-on-Suir. The Suir mainly gets a run of grilse and summer fish, and the two best fishing months are June and September. Downstream
of Clonmel the Suir is broad and deep with productive shallow glides. From Clonmel to Kilsheelan it holds good stocks of trout. Much of the fishing in this area is controlled by Clonmel & District Angling Club, Lindville House, Clonmel. Telephone: 052 61 33450
Salmon licences and permits are available from Clonmel Salmon & Trout Anglers Association. Telephone: 052 61 21279.
